Dr. Betty Shabazz Leadership Academy
In honor of our deceased Sister and charter member of the North Manhattan Alumnae Chapter, Dr. Betty Shabazz, and in response to the need within our communities to use sisterhood to enhance the future of our African American girls, Delta Academy was developed. The symbol for the Delta Academy is the Dream Catcher. A Dream Catcher in Native American culture is believed to possess the power to capture bad dreams entangling them in the web, thus allowing only the good dreams to pass through to the center of the dream hoop into the person's being.
Delta Academy was created "to catch the dreams" of our African American girls aged 11-14 and guide their positive dreams and aspirations to a successful future. Our purposes are:
To save our girls from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures
To demonstrate the relevance to a girl's future of scholarship in the areas of math, science, technology, and non-traditional careers; sisterhood as it relates to relationships with peers and Delta members; and service in the form of leadership and service learning
Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta G E M S
A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful “Dr. Betty Shabaaz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow”, the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS, named for Delta's 12th National President was created to “catch the dreams” of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the frame work to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a “CAN DO” attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are: To instill the need to excel academically; To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success; To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures, high school and beyond; andTo create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities. The Delta GEMS framework is composed of five major components (Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service, and Infinitely Complete), forming a road map for college and career planning. Topics within the five major components are designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth.Delta GEMS, like Delta Academy, is implemented by chapters of Delta Sigma Theta. Lawry's Foods has announced the National Collegiate Public Service Caddy and Grant Recognition Program which will recognize and reward a Delta collegiate chapter in each region for outstanding implementation of the Delta GEMS program.

The EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) program is designed to refocus the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., with the support and action of other major organizations, on the plight of African-American males. Both informal and empirical data suggests that the vast majority of African-American males continues to be in crisis and is not reaching its fullest potential educationally, socially and emotionally.
EMBODI is designed to address these issues through dialogue, and recommendations for change and action. EMBODI will include a program format and information template. The delivery options may include a town hall meeting, workshops, and/or teen leadership summits.
